Description

This medium chopping board is made from sapele and European beech offcuts, shaped and joined by hand in my small workshop. Pale, fine-grained beech alternates with stripes of warm red-brown sapele, and the edges are softly rounded for comfortable handling. Using offcuts means good timber that would otherwise be thrown away gets a second life, and it means every board is a one-off. The pattern, grain and colour of yours won’t be repeated.

Caring for your board

A little regular care keeps a wooden board looking good and lasting for years.

Everyday use

  • Wipe or wash by hand with a soft cloth or sponge and warm, mild soapy water as soon as you can after use.
  • Rinse quickly and dry with a cloth. Then stand the board on its edge so air can reach both sides.
  • Never put it in the dishwasher, and don’t leave it soaking or sitting in water. This is what causes warping and cracking.
  • Keep it away from direct heat, radiators and strong sunlight, and don’t put hot pans on it.

Re-oiling with your board butter

  • Re-treat the board when it starts to look dry or pale, or when water stops beading on the surface. Monthly is a good rhythm at first, then as needed.
  • Make sure the board is clean and fully dry. Rub on a thin, even layer of board butter with a soft cloth, covering both sides and the edges.
  • Leave it to soak in for a few hours or overnight, then buff off any excess with a clean cloth.
  • If you run out of board butter, food-grade mineral oil works too, followed by a little beeswax.

Wood is a natural material, and a board that is used and cared for will develop knife marks and character. This is a sign it is being loved.
