Oak Chopsticks with Walnut Rest

Description

Based on Japanese Hashi, this pair of chopsticks is made from oak, planed and sanded by hand in my small workshop until they feel smooth and light in the hand. Each pair comes with its own small rest, made from American black walnut, to keep the tips off the table. The pale oak and the dark walnut sit well together on the table.

Caring for your chopsticks

A little regular care keeps wooden chopsticks looking good and lasting for years.

Everyday use

• Wash by hand with warm, mild soapy water as soon as you can after use.
• Rinse quickly and dry with a cloth. Then leave them standing upright, or resting on their rest, so air can reach them.
• Never put them in the dishwasher, and don’t leave them soaking in water. This is what causes warping and cracking.
• Keep them away from direct heat, radiators and strong sunlight.

Re-oiling

• Re-treat them when they start to look dry or pale. Every few months is usually enough.
• Make sure they are clean and fully dry. Rub on a thin layer of food-grade mineral oil or board butter with a soft cloth.
• Leave to soak in for a few hours or overnight, then buff off any excess with a clean cloth.

Wood is a natural material, and chopsticks that are used and cared for will develop character over time. This is a sign they are being loved.
